Arrivederci Yamato, Soldiers of Love

Released: August 5, 1978

Length: 2 hours 20 minutes (English Dubbed version "Farewell Yamato": 2 hours)

Notes: This is an ALTERNATIVE storyline. It later became basis story for second TV series, which replaced it. (Japanese title = "Saraba Uchuu Senkan Yamato...")

It is the dawn of the year 2201. This movie tells the same story as TV Season 2, except that Mark Venture never falls in love with Trelaina, who is made entirely of anti-matter. Desslok dies. Most of the Starforce crew dies. At the end, the Derek Wildstar, sitting aside a dead Nova, teams up with Trelaina and succeeds in ramming the Argo into Zordar's dreadnaught, saving Earth but killing himself in the process. One disturbing film. Fortunately, the producers of Yamato said that we can forget that this story ever happened, and replace it entirely with the story of TV Season 2 (see episode synopses earlier in this Document).

Naming Convention Mix-up

Interestingly, in at least the Dubbed version (see below), the familiar English Star Blazers names are used, instead of the Japanese names. The excpetion to this is that the ship is not called the "Argo", but rather the "Yamato". Why this inconsistency was put into the script, I do not know. However, there is yet another exception: In one instance, Desslok refers to the Star Force's ship as "Argo". I am told that this whole "Argo"/"Yamato" thing was a result of a series of flip-flopping decisions on the part of the script writers, with the script being changed each time, and that "Yamato" finally won the day, though "Argo" was left in that one place in the script.

Two English releases from Voyager

It is perhaps worth mentioning that this movie has been released in two formats by Voyager for English-speaking audiences. The first release, in 1994, was a dubbed version (packaged in a white box, with red lettering, entitled "Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato: In the Name of Love"). Many fans were not happy with the voice acting or the scripts for this adaptation, nor with the fact that nearly 20 minutes of footage was cut out.

In response to fan outcries, Voyager released a sub-titled version of Arrivederci Yamato, full-length, packaged in a white box with blue lettering. It was titled simply, "Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato".
