"We're on a fool's errand, and Gamilon is waiting, and waiting, and WAITING. They're PLAYING with us! They let us go a little ways... and then POUNCE... like a cat with a mouse!"
A Gamilon communications relay satellite allows contact with Earth -- which demoralizes the crew by letting them know how bad it is at home. Engineer Sparks, and others, begin to question the mission. Homer begins using the channel unauthorised, and seeing his dying mother, gets delusional and jumps ship, and has to be retrieved.
Note: I was watching Babylon 5 the other day, Born to the Purple, and noted a striking similarity to this episode in Ivanova's unauthorised use of the Gold Channel to speak with her dying father.
"The Star Force is just making its turn now. Don't they realise that it's 10 seconds too late? But, then it was already too late when I pressed this button..." -- Lysis
Planet Balan is the half-way point between Earth and Iscandar. Lysis's ultimate plan is to push the Star Force into Balan's surface with a huge artificial sun. But Vulgar knows this would destroy the base on Balan (but perhaps still make Lysis look good in Desslok's eyes). He calls Desslok who orders Lysis to stop, allowing the Star Force to destroy the sun and the base at the same time.
