We can't rush around the Universe rescuin' every damsel in distress! -- Wisdom of the Earth Defense Committee
Wildstar and Nova visit the remains of one of the underground cities that Earth used when it had been devastated by Gamilon radiation. Wildstar fears that the new threat could make them necessary again, and knows the the EDF government will not act quickly enough.
I don't know what the future holds, but who does?! If you know or feel there's something you can do to make it better, don't you think you should do it? -- Wildstar
The encoded message received during the power surge is analysed and determined to be a jammed distress call from outside the solar system -- originating somewhere in the same area as the approaching comet (the issue of it being in some "unknown language" seems to have gone away). But the Earth Defense Committee refuses to take action or to take the possibility of a new threat seriously.
Wildstar assembles the old Star Force crew in front of Captain Avatar's memorial statue (Heroes' Hill), and proposes a renegade mission to seek out the new threat.
This is the only episode in which a character directly mentions the word "Star Blazers". Nova refers to the trip to Iscandar and "...all those funny, adventurous Star Blazers." One gets the impression that her words might be in reference to the episodes themselves as well as the Star Force crew members.
"Don't be a fool, Stone! I know they are rebels, but they are also heroes. If we destroy them, we will be the ones in disgrace..."
-- E.D.C. Commander
Against the wishes of Earth government, the old Star Force is reassembled to answer the distress message that Sandor received. Derek Wildstar summons Dr Sane to join them, telling him not to inform Nova. Nova, however, is keen to what is going on and insists she come along. On their way to the Argo's undersea dock site, they pass the Hero's Hill monument once again, where they encounter Mark Venture:
Venture: "Doc!"
Sane: "The Argo is taking off at 0-700 hours. We don't have much time!"
Venture: "Doc, why are you this is the right thing to do? I've always believed in obeying orders. But, to do THIS?! The message that Wildstar feels is so important isn't even very clear. And, yet he's disobeying orders and rushing off."
Sane: "You could be right. But, still, I'm going with them."
Venture: "What?"
Sane: "If there is no danger then we are doing a foolish thing. But, if there IS a threat to peace, and we do nothing to prevent it... WELL! I'll take my chance on being a fool!"
Venture: "But, Doc, it's one thing to make a decision like that for yourself. But, remember, the Star Force is a lot of people who have a lot to lose. What about them, Doc?"
Sane: "The Star Force IS kind-of special. They're people willing to give up a lot. The world would not be as it is today if it were not FOR the Star Force."
Venture: "Yes I know."
Sane: "People don't always get a chance to do something that matters in this world. SO... when the time comes for someone to step forward..."
Resigned to the apparent fact that Venture is not joining them on their mutinous journey, Wildstar prepares to take the Argo through the water locks. But, just as he gives the orders, Mark Venture arrives on the bridge to take over. "Boy, Venture, you sure had me worried." They take off from the undersea dock against orders, dodging magnetic missiles, and destroying a battle satellite in the process.
IQ-9 helped design the battle satellites. Also, this episode uses several sequences of stock footage from the Arrivederci Yamato movie. We learn that the Commander is more sympathetic to the motives of the Star Force than his position allows. He reluctantly orders the Star Force to be tracked down and stopped.
